“Ask Me for whatever you want; I’ll give it to you”

My dad was a man after God’s own heart. He was the King of Israel but it wasn’t just handed down to him. He had to face adversity after adversity before he got the throne. He taught me every single day to walk in the path of the Lord and to trust in Him and His ways. This was just theory to me, well, until now. Imagine being taken from a life of luxury and handed down a kingdom to rule. Half the time, I can’t even feel my feet because of the fear of screwing up everything my father built.

Now, Imagine my shock when God appeared to me in a dream. Why me? I shouldn’t even be the King. My parents weren’t even supposed to be together. My father got my mother’s first husband killed and took her to be his wife. I’ve heard the stories. I’m technically the fruit of a mistake, of sin, of something unholy, of something that should not have been. They ended up losing their first child because what they did was abominable. I’ve always felt like the least important person in the palace. I have brothers who deserve to be on this throne; brave valiant soldiers, yet somehow, I’m the King now. Either way, let me continue…His question was simple and direct. He said, “Ask me for whatever you want and I will give it to you.” Most people would have flipped out because this isn’t something that happens every day. God doesn’t just go around handing out wishes like a genie. Once the shock wore off, I started to wonder. I’m human so I did think about asking for wealth, but I decided against it. After a few minutes, I knew exactly what I needed.

I asked God for Wisdom. I asked for a discerning heart to know right from wrong. I asked for insight into the minds of the people I would rule. I need to understand their perceptions and be able to be a leader. I asked for prudence to be able to administer justice. I wanted to leave a mark on the sands of time as a leader and a ruler who was just and always walked according to the Lord.

I don’t know why but God said that He would bless me with wealth and riches and would make me a great King because I asked for what is most important. One simple condition: Walk in Obedience, keep His decrees and walk in the steps of my father. I’m sure that it won’t be easy, but I’m determined to make my Father and my God proud. I was given this position of power for a reason, I won’t let my past or my fears hold me back. With God by my side and a heart which throbs for this nation, I’m ready to take my place.

Now, for the real question, if God asks you this question, What would you say? What would you want more than anything in the world? Where does your heart lie? What are your priorities? That’s some food for thought. Let me leave you with something my dad always used to say, ‘Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desire of your heart’.

– Solomon (Now, King Solomon, I sure hope I get used to this)

While you’re at it, check out 1 Kings 3 for the entire story.
Have a wonderful weekend ahead! 🙂
